2021 National Championship Odds: ’Bama Favored Over OSU

We’ve made it through a stressful, shortened and overall wild 2020 college football season with just one game on tap for all the marbles. Alabama knocked off Notre Dame while Ohio State ran through Clemson in the semifinals, setting up the College Football Playoff National Championship Game between the Crimson Tide and Buckeyes.

Alabama is a modest 7.5-point favorite in the championship game, which will take place at Hard Rock Stadium in Florida on Monday, January 11.

Online sportsbook Bovada has released the national championship game odds with Alabama coming in as the 7.5-point favorite on the spread and -275 on the moneyline. The total is set at 75 points for what sportsbooks are predicting to be a high-scoring affair.

Alabama Or Ohio State? Who Wins 2021 National Championship?

There were many Ohio State doubters after the Buckeyes played in just five regular-season games and followed up with a Big Ten championship game victory over Northwestern that was closer than it should’ve been. However, those doubters – Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney included – got to see what the College Football Playoff committee saw in the Buckeyes as they handed Clemson a 49-28 beatdown.

Meanwhile, ho-hum, what do you know, another national championship game appearance for Alabama, which remains perfect on the season and has a top-five offense, not to mention two players among the finalists for the Heisman Trophy.

On the one hand, getting the Buckeyes as an underdog feels like an automatic bet, much like in the semifinal game vs Clemson, which cashed for backers. On the flip side, this Crimson Tide team looks absolutely unstoppable with a dynamic offense and a fairly stout defense that has had some hiccups but in general has been fairly tight.

Both teams can attack through the air with Alabama’s Mac Jones-to-DeVonta Smith connection and OSU’s Justin Fields-to-Chris Olave combination. But the run game is also stout for both as Najee Harris totes the ball for the Tide and Trey Sermon has been a man on a mission down the stretch for the Buckeyes.

Defensively, Alabama has more issues than Ohio State but one can argue that the level of competition that the two teams faced was drastically different.

Overall, the teams are too evenly matched for a touchdown spread so I like Ohio State +7.5, but as far as being crowned champion, I think Alabama is the team to do it this year.

What is a Futures Bet for NCAA Football Teams?

When it comes to big events for any sport, you can bet months in advance. In this case, a futures bet is a wager made on which team will win the national championship. Each week, oddsmakers will update the odds to reflect how a squad is doing. If a team is plagued with injuries, their chances of making it to the final game slim down. A surging squad will see their odds skyrocket.

Understanding College Football Championship Odds

When you go to a college football sportsbook, you’ll see the betting lines laid out like this:

  • Alabama +250
  • Clemson +275
  • Ohio State +275
  • LSU +450
  • Georgia +1400

Unlike a traditional straight-up bet where there’s a clear favorite marked by the minus sign (-), ‘Bama is the fave since they have the lowest odds. The rest are considered underdogs.

If you believe that LSU has the greatest odds of winning the championship, and you bet $50 on them, you’d get a payout of $275 – your original $50 is returned along with your winnings of $225. On the other hand, if you’re looking at Georgia and think they’re going to turn it around and win it all, that same $50 would give you $750 – you get your $50 back, plus your prize of $700. Our odds calculating tool will show you how much you’d win based on the odds and amount bet.

When you see futures odds that you like, it’s best to jump on them early. As mentioned above, betting sites will adjust the odds as we get closer to bowl season and teams move up and down in the standings.
