College Basketball Betting Preview: Kansas Jayhawks vs. Texas Longhorns – Saturday, Jan. 2, 2021

The eighth ranked Texas Longhorns (7-1, 1-0) will travel to Lawrence, Kansas to take on the third ranked Kansas Jayhawks (8-1, 2-0). Kansas has started Big 12 play with an impressive start to the season with wins over West Virginia and Texas Tech.

Texas started conference play with a home win over Oklahoma State. A road win against Kansas would go a long way come seeding time in March Madness.

Texas Betting Preview

The Longhorns have had their best start to a season under Shaka Smart. They have nice neutral court wins over Indiana and North Carolina, but a win at Allen Fieldhouse would put everyone on notice that this Texas team is for real.

Matt Coleman III leads the team in scoring (13.5), assists (4.5) and steals (1.5). He has also been clutch at the three free throw line where he is shooting 88% for the year.

Courtney Ramey (13.1), Greg Brown (12.5) and Andrew Jones (11.6) are all averaging double figures for the Longhorns. Ramey is shooting 42.9% from three-point range and freshman Brown is leading the team in rebounding at 7.5 per contest.

Texas is ranked 9th in the nation by Kenpom. The Longhorns offense is ranked 32nd in efficiency while the defense ranks fourth.

Kansas Betting Preview

Since losing to number one Gonzaga to start the season the Jayhawks have reeled off eight straight wins, including impressive victories over ranked teams in three of their last four games. A win over Texas would give them victories over three of the competitors for the Big 12 conference title to open league play.

Ochai Agbaji leads Kansas in scoring at 14.8 per game, followed closely by freshman Jalen Wilson who is averaging 14.6 per contest. Wilson leads the team in rebounding at 7.9 per game.

Marcus Garrett has really come on strong since struggling to open the season. He leads Kansas in assists (3.6) and steals (1.6). He does need to start looking for his own shot more as he has been very productive but hasn’t shot nearly enough for my liking.

Kenpom has Kansas ranked as the seventh best team in the nation. The offense is 13th in efficiency while the defense ranks seventh.

Longhorns/Jayhawks Betting Lines

MyBookie has Kansas as a 4-point favorite. The total is set at 136 points.

It is going to be a defensive battle in Lawrence as two of the best defenses in the country go to battle. Open shots will be at a premium, so not turning the ball over will most likely be the difference.

Garrett’s resurgence will be important in this game and I think he starts to be more assertive on offense. The Jalen Wilson/Greg Brown matchup will be a fun one as two of the best freshmen in the conference battle each other. I like the Jayhawks to win and cover in this one.
