DeVonta Smith Wins Heisman: Was -170 Favorite

The Alabama Crimson Tide star DeVonta Smith has won the Heisman Trophy. He was a -170 favorite at BetUS.

Smith’s win is the first time in nearly three decades that a wide receiver has won the trophy. He beat out three other finalists, all quarterbacks: Alabama’s Mac Jones, Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence and Florida’s Kyle Trask.

BetUS offered up their prediction last week:

The last wide receiver to win the Heisman was Desmond Howard of Michigan in 1991. DeVonta Smith has more yards and more catches than Howard did, but fewer touchdowns and far fewer return yards.

Smith has had a favorable season compared to Howard’s, however, and there is recency bias at play here. In the SEC Championship game against Florida, he caught 15 passes for 184 yards and two touchdowns. He is the online betting favorite, and for good reason.

Smith is the third player from Alabama to claim college football’s most prestigious award and the first receiver to win it since Michigan’s Desmond Howard in 1991.
