- Teofimo Lopez defeated Vasyl Lomachenko via unanimous decision last October.
- Fans have been demanding a rematch since this bout took place.
- There have been new issues booking Lopez vs. Lomachenko 2 in 2021.
This past October, 23-year-old Teofimo Lopez shocked the world by defeating Vasyl Lomachenko via unanimous decision. Many fans anticipated that an immediate rematch would take place next. Unfortunately, it now seems unlikely that we will see Lopez vs. Lomachenko 2 anytime soon.
This is one of the biggest-possible fights to make in the lightweight division. Lopez doesn’t seem interested in taking another fight against “Loma,” though. Today, we’ll talk about what is keeping this bout from coming together.
Let’s get into it!
Boxing’s Lightweight Division is Stacked With Talent Right Now
Every division in boxing is exciting right now. Some feel that lightweight is currently the best. Over the past few years, this weight class has developed some of the most exciting fighters in the sport. That includes Ryan Garcia, Vasyl Lomachenko, and Gervonta Davis.
Garcia recently proved that he is a legitimate world-class talent by knocking out Luke Campbell in the 7th round. It was an amazing win, as he bounced back from a serious knockdown in round number two. Garcia is now waiting to see who he’ll face next. A bout with Gervonta Davis is currently being considered.
Gervonta Davis last competed against Leo Santa Cruz. He looked incredible in that bout, defeating Santa Cruz via knockout in the 6th round. Many now feel that “Tank” is the best lightweight fighter in boxing.
Teofimo Lopez is also in discussion as one of lightweight’s best fighters. He took on pound-for-pound great Vasyl Lomachenko this past October. Most online sports betting websites listed Lomachenko as a massive underdog leading into fight night.
Incredibly, Lopez pushed the pace early and earned a unanimous decision victory. At 16-0, Lopez is now one of the sport’s most exciting up and comers. Since the fight with Lomachenko, fans have expected a rematch to be announced.
It now seems this won’t take place. Lopez spoke about his fighting future and doesn’t seem to feel that Vasyl will be a part of it.
Lopez vs. Lomachenko 2 May Never Come Together
Vasyl Lomachenko has been one of the best boxers on the planet for years. He had an incredible amateur career before making the move into the professional ring. In just his third fight, Lomachenko won the WBO featherweight title.
The loss to Teofimo Lopez was unexpected in many ways. Most fans recognized that Teofimo was a talented fighter with knockout power. Not many felt he had the technical ability to defeat a fighter like Lomachenko, though.
Lopez now seems to be looking ahead to other matchups. He recently spoke to the media about his next fight. Interestingly, he seems to be pushing aside the idea that a rematch with Lomachenko should be booked.
“You [Team Lomachenko] didn’t want to put a rematch clause on our contract. There’ a lot of things. I could get real dirty into this, but I’m not. I’m looking the other way,” Lopez told the media. “I’m looking for bigger and better things. This is now where I determine how my future is going to look like and how I determine it, and it’s not going to look like a cherry-pick. I’m going to go out there and be a fan to the fans. And I’m going to go out there and take on everyone and anyone for them because that’s what really matters, the people. Cherry-picking for me, I know I’m not one, that’s all I got to say.”
Lopez clearly felt disrespected heading into the first matchup with Vasyl. He is now giving the Ukrainian former champion a taste of his own medicine. Despite his comments, however, there’s still a chance that this rematch could take place.
It will be interesting to see how things play out. Everyone wants to see Teofimo Lopez compete again. We’ll continue offering updates on this situation over the next few months!
Other Possible Opponents for Teofimo Lopez
Lopez vs. Lomachenko would be a massive bout for the sport of boxing. A win could legitimize Lopez’s claim to being a champion. A loss could derail his career and put Lomachenko back at the top of the pound-for-pound rankings.
It now seems that this bout may not come together. If that is the case, there are several exciting opponents that Teofimo could face off with. As we mentioned earlier, the lightweight division is better now than ever before.
One name that’s being tossed around is Ryan Garcia. Another is Gervonta Davis. Interestingly, Lopez seems to feel that both of these men are scared to compete against him.
“I know y’all scared and sh*t, but let’s just make the fight happen for the fans. Let’s just do that. Don’t overprice yourselves. If y’all believe y’all the best and y’all think that y’all can take this, then let’s make the fight happen! Man, don’t be p**** about it!”
Both of these options would be extremely exciting. A matchup with number-one contender George Kambosos would also be a good one for fans around the world. Hopefully, an official opponent is named before long.
