HS Football: COVID Continues to Cause Changes for Hasbrouck Heights and Wood-Ridge

HASBROUCK HEIGHTS, NJ – Week Three of the 2020 high school football season took an unusual twist, as games were canceled, made, and re-scheduled throughout the week. The results were mixed.

Mid-week, the Wood-Wood versus Butler and the Hasbrouck Heights versus Secaucus game were both canceled as Wallington and Secaucus shut down due to COVID concerns. Briefly, there was a thought that a Wood-Ridge versus Hasbrouck Heights match up that local fans wanted to see would occur.

Then Wallington had to cancel its game with Park Ridge, and schedule roulette began. Wood-Ridge lost a home game, going to Park Ridge, in a divisional game, and Hasbrouck Heights was looking for an opponent, as the NJIC moved the game from Week 5 to Week 3.

According to NJSIAA site, the only Group 1 or Group 2 teams in the state that had an open date for Week 3 were Lakeland and Shabazz (Newark.) There was no game to be made, and the Aviators had a bye week.

Additionally, Cresskill and Becton was moved from Friday night to Sunday.

Park Ridge rolled over Wood-Ridge, 38-0 to take command of the Patriot Division at 2-0. Becton won 30-0 over Cresskill, setting their Week 5 matchup with Hasbrouck Heights as the probable Meadowlands Division championship game. Sunday night it looked like things would be a bit strange, as the Aviators would have a loss coming into that game, but in a non-division al game the week before Park Ridge, and would finish the season with one less game played

Monday, brought more changes, as Park Ridge canceled all sports for the week, including Saturday’s scheduled game with St. Mary. So they will finish one game short. As a result of the cancellation, the Wood-Ridge versus Park Ridge JV game scheduled for Monday was canceled.

Hasbrouck Heights JV, meanwhile, was scheduled to play Fort Lee since the beginning of the season, as Secaucus did not have numbers for a JV team. The Aviators defeated the Tigers, 12-0, behind two rushing touchdown from quarterback Frank Billings.

Week Four has already been impacted as Wallington, Secaucus, and Park Ridge sit and Butler sits out a second week, and Wood-Ridge plays Roselle (a replacement for Wallington).
